The trailer for DreamWorks Animation's 'Home' is an odd one, showcasing a genuinely interesting science-fiction premise but filling the margins with screaming, fart jokes and lame pop-culture references. The 'How to Train Your Dragon' films have bought a lot of goodwill for the studio, but between this new effort and 'The Penguins of Madagascar,' they're pushing it.

Based on the kids' novel 'The True Meaning of Smekday,' 'Home' takes place in the aftermath of an alien invasion that sees the human population relocated so the aliens can do what they please with their new home. Then a bumbling alien outcast meets up with a young Earth girl who managed to avoid alien incarceration and an instant friendship is born. In the movie, these characters are voiced by Jim Parsons and Rihanna, which may be the oddest pairing of talent since ... uh, ever. Steve Martin is also on hand as the alien leader, but his character is the one providing the fart jokes, so the natural awesomeness of Steve Martin is canceled out.

Look, this is a lousy, loud and obnoxious trailer, but DreamWorks has surprised us before. Maybe the finished film will have heart and wit and a lead character who will help us forget that he's voiced by a 'Big Bang Theory' cast member. Positive thinking, right?

Here's the official synopsis:

When Earth is taken over by the overly-confident Boov, an alien race in search of a new place to call home, all humans are promptly relocated, while all Boov get busy reorganizing the planet. But when one resourceful girl, Tip, (Rihanna, who also contributes a song) manages to avoid capture, she finds herself the accidental accomplice of a banished Boov named Oh (Jim Parsons). The two fugitives realize there’s a lot more at stake than intergalactic relations as they embark on the road trip of a lifetime.

'Home' will open in theaters on March 27, 2015.
