I am the oldest of 3 kids in my family and as you can see in the pictures, I'm also the shortest of the three! Even though my brothers and I have been though some tough stuff recently, I like to remind them that we are stuck with each other (whether we like it or not) because we are family. Everyone has family disagreements, but you mend the fences because that family love never goes away.

I will say that being the oldest did have some advantages and now there is scientific proof to back it up!

Where you fall in the birth order matters:

According to Jeffery Kluger's book "The Sibling Effect: What the Bonds Among Brothers and Sisters Reveal About Us, " firstborns are supposedly the most successful and most driven to succeed. He also goes on to say that for good or bad, siblings can teach us about new things. We depend on older brothers or sisters to teach you how to cook, how to throw a baseball, etc.

"Sibling relationships...outlast marriages, survive the death of parents, resurface after quarrels that would sink any friendship. They flourish in a thousand incarnations of closeness and distance, warmth, loyalty and distrust."-- Erica E. Goode

Siblings spend a LOT of time together:

In a 1996 Penn State University study, it was found that by age 11 children spend 1/3 of their free time with their siblings. That's more time than they spend with anyone including parents, teachers, their friends or even by themselves!

Our siblings teach us how to interact with the world:

Fighting with your brother or sister as a child was actually a good thing. According to at least one study on kindergartners, those with siblings got along better with classmates than those without. Douglas Downey from Ohio State University said, “Children without siblings were consistently rated as having poorer social skills."

And finally, something I always remind my brothers...

“You can kid the world, but not your sister.” -- Charlotte Gray
