When I was a kid; Thanksgivings, birthdays, and family get togethers weren't complete unless there was a pie from Grandma's Pie and Restaurant. The homestyle spot with decor straight out of granny's living room had been a staple on Central Ave for years.  It was always sort of assumed that somehow, someway, Grandma would always be there.  Today I learned , with a heavy heart, that's not the case. Grandma's was Cracker Barrel before there was a Cracker Barrel and it was the place to get delicious pies.  But that was a long time ago.  Before the Albany area became consumed by big business grocery stores and specialty shoppes with their own bakeries, there was Grandma, and nobody did a Dutch apple or a chocolate cream like her.  After 42 years of home cooked goodness, the sad news came down today that Grandma is hanging up her apron and the long time Albany landmark is about a week away from closing it's doors for good. The owners simply couldn't aford the rent anymore.

They say all good things come to an end, and Grandma's was as good as it gets.
