If you ever wanted to try out ice fishing, this is the weekend to do it. It's free to fish all weekend in New York state. Here's what you need to know. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is offering free fishing all across New York state this weekend (February 16th and 17th).

According to CBS 6, this weekend winter fishermen and women can try and catch all kinds of fish without a fishing license. You can catch perch, sunfish, northern, pickerel and walleye in the waters across the state.

The DEC says to use caution when going out on the ice. It should be at least four inches thick and can be tested using an auger or an ice spud. They recommend to dress warm and layer your clothes. Also you should bring extra gloves because they tend to get wet and wear waterproof boots.
