We have many firsts in our lives and can remember most of them. Your first job, first kiss, first car – the list can be pretty extensive. How about the first time you went on the internet? I think mine is amusing, but at the same time a little scary.

I was at a friend’s house and she had a computer complete with ability to access the internet. This was back in the 1990s, so this was just before the ‘net started to explode to the masses.

As I opened up the ‘net icon, and wasn’t sure where to go. So I figured I’d try something that I knew had a website. I typed what I thought was the correct information into the address bar. My excitement was building as the site was starting to load. Much to my confusion, I see these three huge letters show up on the monitor. XXX. I missed one letter in the address. Still being green with this internet thing, I had only heard about porn sites. I freaked out, because I wasn’t sure what I did. This isn’t what I wanted, and I didn’t know what would happen next. After a few seconds of hyperventilating,  I think I let out a loud call for help. We all had a great little laugh about my first experience online: going to a porn site. That sounds almost obscene. That’s the amusing part.

The real scary part is how easy it was for me to go to this site, and if it was that easy for me, then how easy that would it be for a child to do this, and all by accident. Well, it’s been a while since that happened, and all I can say is make sure you have the parental controls set on your computer.

Of course you know that you and your children can visit the WGNA web site anytime and know it will be a safe place. What are some child safe sites that you have your kids visit?
