A 55-year-old East Greenbush man went to his estranged wife’s work place with a shotgun on Tuesday afternoon. She saw him pull into the parking lot, driving a white van and was seen holding a long gun.

In a press release from the East Greenbush Police Department, Robert P. Hayes showed up at the Dunkin Donuts, on Columbia Turnpike where she works.  He had a brief conversation with her on a cell phone. That’s when he said that he threatened her, and would use the gun.

The wife called 911. East Greenbush Police contacted neighboring police agencies, and in a joint effort, closed Columbia Turnpike for about 10 minutes, while officers tried to negotiate with Hayes and give up the gun. After Hayes got out of the van, he was tasered. He was then taken into custody. The police also took the gun, which was a loaded 12-gauge shotgun.

Hayes was charged with Unlawful possession of a Loaded Firearm in a Motor Vehicle, Resisting Arrest, Driving While Intoxicated and Aggravated DWI, and later arraigned and sent to Rensselaer County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail. I can’t imagine how his wife felt when he did this.
