Chris Cagle, ‘Let There Be Cowgirls’ – Song Review

Let-There-Be-Cowgirls
Bigger Picture Music Group

With singles from his new album ‘Back in the Saddle,’ Chris Cagle is successfully reinventing himself as a country bad boy. ‘Let There Be Cowgirls’ picks up the loud and rowdy that dropped ‘Got My Country On’ in the Top 20. The spirit of this rock-country jam gets one past a clunky melody.

The four-minute long cut is the sort of athem-like barroom jam you pay to see, but it’s difficult to sing along to until the chorus comes around. Actually, the pre-chorus begins the party.

And then the mountains rose up / Across the great plains / And all the angels up in heaven started singing all that’s missing is a pretty thang,” Cagle sings beforehand.

The chorus goes:

Let there be cowgirls, for every cowboy / Make ‘em strong as any man / Something you can’t tame she’s a mustang / Heartbeat of the heart land / She’s got a drawl y’all / She’s the salt of the earth that rocks my world / Let there be cowgirls.”

The concept of the song — that God created light, wind and then beautiful women  – will draw a range of reactions from “Hell yeah!” to chuckles, to accusations of misogyny. One is overthinking this song if he or she thinks Cagle is making some sort of social statement. ‘Let There Be Cowgirls’ is a unique way to tell a familiar story, which is something that is difficult to do in country music.
