Candy Heart Manufacturer Closes Abruptly

A few months ago, it was announced that Necco, the maker of candy hearts and other treats, may be going out of business after 170 years. Then there was a buyer who bought the company for millions. Now, without warning, a major factory of the candies has closed.  According to CBS News, Wednesday morning the plant that manufactures the candy hearts, Necco wafers, and other candies shut down without warning laying off two hundred and thirty workers. Those workers were told to pick up their final paychecks on Friday.

Round Hill, who is the investment firm, did not say who took over Necco after they filed for bankruptcy back in April. They also didn't say if candy production will resume at the plant in Massachusetts.

Necco, or New England Confectionery Co., is the country's oldest continuously operating candy company. It has been in business producing Sweetheart Conversation Hearts, Candy Buttons, Mary Jane candies and Clark Bars for over 170 years.
