Dolly Parton Surprises Cam Before ‘Diane’ Performance on ‘GMA’ [Watch]
Cam was, of course, awestruck when Parton appeared on the screen, praising the song, which is a callback to "Jolene."
"You did good on that," Parton remarked. "I wish I could be there to hear it in person, but I'll be watching you on TV." With the legend's kind words of support, Cam offered a stellar performance of the dynamic single — a modernized version of Parton's classic that takes on the perspective of the other woman.
Who Is Cam's "Diane," Anyway?
"I promise I didn't know he was your man / I would've noticed a gold wedding band / Diane / I'd rather you hate me than not understand / Diane," Cam powerfully belts over an upbeat melody that blends traditional country and Americana. The singer stunned in Times Square, with members of the audience clapping along in the background as she charmingly delivered the song's powerful message of honesty and apology.
"I hoped it would help some people — and in my mind specific people that I’m close to —but you never know who it’s going to reach," Cam says of how she hopes the song impacts people.
The bright star is taking her stories on the road and telling them exactly how she wants on the 2018 Listening Room Series Tour, which brings her to a handful of intimate venues across the country to perform her beloved tracks, alongside special fan requests, songs she's penned for other artists and new music off her upcoming album. The tour begins April 17 in Portland and continues through May 10, when it wraps in Virginia.
