Traveling in the winter months in upstate New York is usually just commuting to work or to the closest mountain to ski. But there is so much more to explore and there is a beautifully breathtaking trip worth a weekend getaway. I travel to western New York quite often, and in the wintertime it can be hit or miss with the weather driving across the state. However, if you get a chance to head out west on the Thruway, you have to explore Niagara Falls in the winter.

Niagara Falls is one of the natural wonders of the world. If you have ever visited, you know it truly is amazing in its power. I have been on the Maid Of The Mist in the summertime where you ride a boat right into the raging falls. But the falls aren't just a place to visit in the summer.

Check out this breathtaking view of Niagara Falls. There are many indoor and outdoor activities and gorgeous views of the partially frozen falls and the ice sculptures that are left on the rocks along the Niagara River.

It will take about five hours to head out to Niagara Falls from Albany, but it is a beautiful way to spend a winter weekend in New York state.
