Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani made their awards show performance debut together at the Billboard Music Awards Sunday night (May 22), bringing their whirlwind romance to the stage with their new duet.

The song, “Go Ahead and Break My Heart,” appears on Shelton’s new record If I’m Honest and takes a candid look at their relationship in the beginning, when everything was uncertain.

The two brought their A-game to the show, beginning with Shelton opening the song solo, silhouetted by a wall of spotlights behind him. Stefani joined in on the first chorus, making her entrance toward the end of the verse donning a head-to-toe glam look, glittering in rhinestones. Notably missing her trademark bold red lips, Stefani took more of a natural look on her makeup, which complemented the sincerity with which both artists perform the tune. It’s clear they both mean every word of what they’re singing. The two look smitten with one another as they perform, Stefani beaming and Shelton mouthing along on her verse, and the audience ate it up.

The couple debuted the song on the set where their romance began when they performed together on The Voice May 9. Their relationship may seem a little too candid for many celebrities, not only talking about each other frequently but writing songs together, but Shelton says they don’t care what people might say.

"We were at a point where it’s like, ‘Do we want to go there? What will people think?’” Shelton says about the song. “And then we finally just got to the point where it’s like, ‘You know what? I don’t give a s–t.'"

If I’m Honest dropped May 20 and is a collection of transparent songs — like “Go Ahead and Break My Heart" — about the artist’s experiences over the last year or so, including his separation from Miranda Lambert last summer.

Neither Shelton nor Stefani were nominated at the 2016 BBMAs, but several other country artists received nods, including Sam Hunt, Luke Bryan, Zac Brown Band and Chris Stapleton, among others.
