With all the news about closing branches of the United States Post Office, it’s nice to get a little sidetracked with a some fun news. Usually we hear about how dogs try to attack mail delivery people, but this was not the case.

Owney Stamp

Owney was a mixed Terrier that used to ride the postal wagons and railways in the late 1800s, and the clerks in the post office in Albany took a serious liking to Owney. He would follow mailbags onto the trains, and was soon considered to be a good luck charm. They never had any accidents on the trains that Owney rode. The Railway Mail Service people made him the unofficial mascot.

In a story from WTEN, “To celebrate the news, Owney, a resident of the Smithsonian's National Postal Museum, is back with a makeover for the opening of a new exhibit that chronicles his adventures. The museum also is announcing an Owney photo look-alike contest.” This kind of reminds me of when Elvis hot his own stamp. Maybe they should use his song "Hound Dog" for a theme.

Instead of being licked by a dog, now you can lick a dog. Doesn’t this give you a good feeling with all the craziness in the world today?
