You may recognize the song "Merry Go Round' from the radio, but you may not know a lot about Kacey Musgraves. She was the opening act for the Kenny Chesney show at the Times Union Center in Albany.  Quite honestly, I thought she was the hit of the entire night.

Do you find yourself listening to the lyrics of songs at an arena show?  Actually, I rarely do. I'm too caught up in the moment, the music, the crowd, the "live" atmosphere of it all to really concentrate on what they're singing.  Not in the Kacey's case.  She's very interesting in that she is young and contemporary looking, but her music is kind of a throwback to bluegrass and traditional folk in my eyes (and ears).  And no cowboy hat here!

Her songs almost force you to listen the way that they're constructed.  In fact, heard "Merry-Go-Round" months ago on YouTube.  I don't even remember how I stumbled upon it, but I did, and her lyrics stopped me in my tracks back then too!   Here's the video of the song in case you haven't heard it.

She's only in her mid twenties and from a small Texas town. I guess she was a contestant on "Nashville Stars" several years ago.

Her lyrics are extremely clever , and many of her songs have a sarcastic sense of humor as well.  Even the title of her album, "Same Trailer, Different Park" makes you snicker.  At the same time, when you get lost in one of her songs, she has a way of making you laugh and feel sadness at the same time.   That's incredible songwriting chops in my book

I consider her a seasoned songwriter before she herself is seasoned! You can read her bio here in Wikipedia if you wish.

Trivia:   Maybe you aren't aware that Kasey wrote "Mama's Broken Heart" for Miranda Lambert.  Not bad for an unseasoned, seasoned composer.

Do yourselves a big favor- either download or run out and buy this CD. I know you can't wear out a compact disc from playing it, but I'm definitely going to put that shiny thing through it's paces
