A 6-year-old kindergarten girl was handcuffed by a police officer, after she allegedly threw a temper tantrum in her school.

In a story that I read in the Times Union, Salecia Johnson was in the principal's office of Creekside Elementary School in Milledgeville, Georgia. According to the police report, the girl is accused of creating quite a ruckus by throwing furniture, ripping things off the walls, knocking over a book shelf creating an injury to the principal, biting the office door knob, jumping on a paper shredder and also tried to break a glass frame above the paper shredder.

An attempt by the officer to calm her down didn’t work. After she resisted, she was the put in handcuffs and taken to the police station. That’s when Johnson charged with simple assault and damage to property. She won’t have to go to court because of her age.

According to the Milledgeville Chief of Police Dray Swicord, "Our policy is that any detainee transported to our station in a patrol vehicle is to be handcuffed in the back. There is no age discrimination on that rule." The Police Chief is standing by the decision made by the officer.

Another part of the story from tv station WMAZ, the girl’s mother, Constance Ruff said "She might have misbehaved, but I don't think she misbehaved to the point where she should have been handcuffed and taken downtown to the police department."

This little girl cause quite a bit of damage and threatened other students’ safety, and the mother think that the police didn’t do the right thing? I hope this girl learned a valuable lesson and keeps her out of trouble for the rest of her life. This is a scared straight story. Maybe this should be done more often. Do you think the police did the right thing?
