This week's Hometown Hero is Karis Ward, a five-year-old from Caroga Lake who donated her long hair to Locks of Love.

Karis saw a photo of a child without hair on her babysitter's computer. When she asked why the child did not have hair, her sitter, Kim, explained the child was undergoing chemotherapy treatments.

When Karis learned that people often donate their long hair to help sick kids through Locks of Love, she immediately decided to donate her own hair, which has only been trimmed three times since she was born. Karis' hair has always been very important to her, but she wanted to help others and so she gave it up.

On the nomination form under occupation, Karis was listed as being a "cute little girl."

As part of the “Hometown Heroes” series, we’ve partnered with County Waste, Latham Ford, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region and Awards by Walsh to celebrate local unsung heroes for their good deeds and honorable work.
